No, the idea has definite merit, I am just trying to be cautious and Tametaka may well be the best choice. I also think that a Clan Champion or a family daimyo uprooting would likely be a bad plan, yes. *g*

I would almost suggest Kakita Ujirou, but despite being a magistrate and good with a blade, the gentleman is perhaps a little ... eccentric for the purpose?

The Unicorn travel a lot. Many are used to living in tents while travelling.

Thus, no doors.

But would the lack of doors be a benefit to him, or upsetting? *g*

A Proposal: Alliance with the Unicorn

Postby Doji Satevis » Tue Apr 28, 2015 4:30 pm

On costs/benefits:

The first Unicorn path choice notes that if they take that route, the number of refugees that are taken in could become a notable drain on the Unicorn's available resources. That drain could be alleviated with access to the Crane grain surplus and economic engine, I would imagine. That could be one possible incentive, for the Unicorn. A cost there could be the need/perception of being beholden to the Crane.

For our part, the Unicorn would lend us the military power that we don't have on our own -- but there is also that sense of being beholden, as well as (if the Unicorn choose to incorporate the notion of an ashigaru army) potential friction over "jumped-up" common folk.

And then there is the clash of ideas, as two Clans with at times radically different lifestyles have come together to possibly direct the future of the Empire's cultural mores and population base. That can't possibly work without terrible complications, I would imagine!

So what we Crane players need to decide is: do we support the idea of alliance with the Unicorn? I like it. Next we would need to decide what kind of resources we could offer to entice their players to vote for that and choose us.

1. Marriage

2. Military cooperation

3. Political pressure on their rivals.

What else do we have at our disposal?

My initial thought would be a high profile marriage for their champion, who is in need of a husband since the Dragon dropped the ball with our help. My initial thought would be Daidoji Tametaka because he is sufficiently important and has qualities that the Unicorn value, including martial skill, experience as a commander, and knowledge of the world outside Rokugan proper.

Kakita Ujirou was also mentioned, but he is relatively unimportant at this time. That wouldn't be the case anymore if he happened to be DESCENDED FROM DAIDOJI UJI *coughStoryTeamcough*

We're a bit hampered by the fact that we don't really know any Crane characters all that well. Who's our best-looking male card? Tametaka can't be it.

I rather support Tametaka as a choice, pending careful timing of marriage so as not to cut off Crane military logistics at the throat. But active warfare is a bad time to officially marry in any case, so perhaps not much of a problem.

Even if it is amusing to picture him all "DOORS WHERE?!" *g*

I think its more important to find a direction that the Unicorn would find appealing. From my frequent forum readings, I think they are leaning toward reaching out toward any Spider who oppose Kanpeki, though many also like the possibilities inherent to their optional path of traveling northwest from Rokugan. Perhaps we can aid them in getting Imperial sanction for their travels (before the Iweko dynasty loses control) or obsfucate the facts (after the rise of the Obsidian Empire or whatever Kanpeki decides to start calling it).

Well once we get some consensus that our fellow Crane support the idea of alliance with the Unicorn, we can send someone over to their forums to find out what would get their players to vote for that choice.

Story Team - Although the characters in the game operate on their word, L5R players do not. If we get this pretty well worked out, would it be possible to get Story Team approval before the votes happen so that people know that 1) the agreement will only go into effect if the votes happen as planned, and 2) if they votes do happen, what we agree will actually occur in the story?

With the presence of a dedicated thread, I decided to head for their forums and make the invitation for them to join us; and I can try to keep up on the Unicorn forum with what folks there may wish to comment on their own forums.
