To be fair to all sides, we have no idea about how Kanpeki will assume the throne. Suppositions aside, we should wait to see how the story develops.

I can definitely see both sides of the argument (that we should stay with the Emperor, showing Honor).
In the western sense, that's not really honorable as it leads down a path that might do many evil things. And in the western sense, honor usually doesn't include evil things.
But in the eastern sense, honor associates with duty, and loyalty, obedience to one's master.
Regardless, when I was reading what Lugumi said, everything made sense except that it almost felt like you were leaning towards option 1.

Claiming to be Emperor doesn't make you so. Being a legitimate Emperor of Rokugan requires the approval of Tengoku. Are you expecting this to be forthcoming in Kanpeki's case?

Look I think we get it. You (and others) don't like Kanpeki and don't want him on the throne. I can get behind that. The thing is you can't start arguing legitimacy for something you have no idea how its going to happen. You mention there is no precedent for someone becoming Emperor without the direct intervention of Tengoku... ever heard of Toturi? I don't recall any "Divine Blessing" as part of his reign/dynasty.
Now yes Kanpeki is tainted and that's bad. No-one's saying that's not the case, but he could be a legitimate Emperor in ways that you don't know even without Tengoku's approval. Plus there's always the (small granted) possibility of him purifying himself of the taint and being the Emperor that the players want, regardless of name/family/father/origins. Embrace the possibilities that exist outside of the "Kanpeki must die" tunnel. It's sunnier for starters.
