If you don't mind a bit of an outsider observation, I wonder if Crane Path 1 doesn't suffer from a bit of mis-emphasis, at least from the perspective of being attractive to Crane players (it may be an appropriate emphasis, if the point was to make it tougher to just oppose Kanpeki). There is a line in the Path that "The disparate clans will need a unifying force, and your skill at making alliances is unparalleled," and that kind of gets lost amid the repeated bits about "setting aside words." Obviously fighting against Kanpeki means a substantial amount of actual fighting, but something that the Crane uniquely could bring to the resistance table are those words - ensuring that the Clans resisting Kanpeki work together, and not at cross-purposes, and especially keeping them focused on preserving the line of Heaven, rather than anyone going off and trying to freelance their own claim on the Throne. Daidoji scouts acting as diplomats or dirty, ragged Crane courtiers who haven't had a bath in two weeks are still quite a bit removed from the usual halls of power, while still maintaining a political vibe.

The Best Crane Clan Path

The Path of Creation

A false Emperor sits on the Throne, and who will topple the false Empire? The Lion? Sworn to the Emperor, we cannot trust them to stand with us!
The Scorpion? The day I trust a Scorpion's word is the day I ascend to the Heavens.
Perhaps the Mantis? Pirates, thieves and merchants, what will they do?

No, it falls on us. But we cannot do this in court. An Emperor sits on the throne, words will not unseat him. Our armies will be able to stand alone.

The Emperor sits in shadow. There can be no shadows without light. Our shugenja have been known to take on heavy burdens in the past, we've carried the Anvil, and today shall fall to putting the Empire's needs over our own principles.

Today, we must make the ultimate sacrifice. Some among us must give their names to forms best not seen. We must breathe shape and life to that which we find so abhorrent. Only with this, can we hope to truly unseat the Emperor, to argue the will of the gods. We must take the darkness, and shape it, bend it to our will. The Emperor cannot stand before the Onis we shall give life to.

This will primarily support a military theme, focused on the summoning of unforgettable creatures to march on the Emperor.

If an old-ish returning outsider might contribute a suggestion...

I understand this has some similarities to other "Option 3 but minus the colonial sneakyboots" ideas. Nonetheless I hope this is a useful contribution to the discussion & I do think it opens up some AWESOME evocative narrative space for the Clan. For a start it would really be one in the eye for everyone who just sees the Crane as a cross-dressing oriental version of Richie Rich.

Blossoms in the Wind

Over many generations of courtly success, the Crane have come to be seen as a Clan of privilege. As a corrupt power rises to ascendancy over the Empire you will be offered the choice to retain that privilege - indeed, to return to the greatest heights of opulence & luxury which the Clan has ever known. The only price is that you surrender all your hope of a virtuous future.

If you choose this Path, you will openly renounce such a corrupt offer. The Crane will renew their commitment to maintaining virtue, honour & Rokugan's cultural heritage within the Empire in these dark times. This is not a strategically advantageous choice. Although somewhat less severe than their eradication in the KYD vision of the future, vengeance visited upon the Clan will assuredly be terrible. As on the many Crane will become martyrs rather than surrender their integrity or virtue.

Although the Clan will be greatly lessened in political power & wealth, those who remain will devote themselves to the preservation of culture. Existing as wandering duellists, skilled artists & eloquent orators, the Crane will cultivate a more humble fellowship - but fellowship nonetheless - with all who hope to stand against the darkness of this age.

In the CCG this path favours honourable political strategies, mainly using duelling & indirect military abilities to defend your fragile interests.

Will we see a poll put up at some point to vote on the proposal for 4th option, at which point the winner would be refined and work-shopped as a Clan then put to a vote against the AEG proposed paths?

This is something I just found at Gisei Toshi, the Phoenix forum. It may help refine our efforts.

Ok guys a few points to consider. If a path is simply another path with less consequences or a combination of other paths you are not really giving us anything to work with. You will still get a full load of consequences. You will still reach a point where you have to chose a priority instead of trying to do multiple things at once.

A path that says we go to war with the shadowlands is not much different than we send forces out to hunt the corrupted it is a refinement of that path which will come down the line anyway you are just jumpin ahead, instead of waiting for us to ask how much investment do you want to make. Then adding in a statement about saving knowledge you are brushing up against option 1 here. Same thing with researching the seals, that brushes up against the one that has been simplified into "pure maho" that path is not all about maho it is about forbidden knowledge which could include pure maho.

If we are serious about a player path we need to act serious. Having our cake and eating it too paths are simply not going to work. A path that is a rehash of another path is not. I personally like the idea of going to full war but not making ourselves kuni witch hunters on meth. Rather we want to end the fighting through superior force. That is a new path that is not like any of the others. Or deciding to end the fighting by helping kanpeki win faster and then becoming a part of his empire. As we see in other clan paths, he wants an empire with structure. We could agree to help end the war sooner to save lives and in exchange for us supporting him we would hold sway over the fate of the peasants or minor clans etc. These are what I would consider player paths because they are new.

So basically come up with something that's actually interesting and not a 'cake and eating it too' thing? Glad they've put that out there, even if it is just a forum post hidden away with the KFC.
