You are right to point out that a duel is not a guaranteed-effect action. I would use duels only when their effect is stronger than that of a non-duel card.
Demonstrating Technique: dishonors, depletes hand, replaces itself. All in Limited.
Iaijutsu Dojo: dishonors, bows.
Weakness Exposed: bows, potentially KILLS, but low FV
COaaT: KILLS, terrain meta, but low FV.
Way of the Crane/Dragon: multiple effects with Discipline.
These are the cards against which all duels must be compared. Does Strength Remains compare? IMHO, it doesn't.
